Hexagram 04 – Youthful Folly – Rich I Ching

When fortune is unfavorable, money is scarce. Yet, when an opportunity arises—regardless of how big or small—one cannot resist grasping at it, much like a child stealing money.

Drawing this hexagram signals “inauspicious times” (a period of misfortune). In such times, one is prone to losing direction. Matters of marriage and business partnerships are unlikely to succeed. Hard work leads only to exhaustion, yielding no real results.

Financial Outlook

Wealth does not flow smoothly. The primary reason is that you are lost, unable to find the right path. In reality, the more you invest or expand your business, the more difficulties you will face. The capital investments will drain your resources, making your efforts futile.

Though you may earn money easily, it will not be put to good use. Instead, it will slip through your fingers without meaningful returns, ultimately leading to more losses than gains. In ancient times, people would consult the I Ching once a month; thus, if a bad omen appeared, they would not despair, knowing that fortunes change with time.

The Moral Perspective

A person who values righteousness over wealth may earn money with ease and gain knowledge through diligent study, but if their fortune is unaligned, “the demons will steal it away.”

“Ill-gotten wealth is like sand in the hands—it will slip away no matter how tightly you grasp it.”

A child steals money out of ignorance and lack of understanding, but one who hoards unrighteous wealth is far more lost, for they have closed the door to enlightenment.
