Hexagram 13 – Fellowship with Men – Rich I Ching
The Path of the Sages – “Wherever You Go, You Prosper”
“Tong Ren” (同人) means unity and alignment with others, which is why it is symbolized as “The Sage Guiding the Way.”
The image of a sage pointing the way comes from a story where a group of lost travelers, confused and uncertain, suddenly encounter a sage who shows them the right path.
Many times in life, we face situations where we don’t know the right course of action, leaving us anxious and distressed. But when we meet a wise mentor, their guidance dispels our doubts and worries.
People without experience or moral clarity often become lost in complex and challenging situations. Without the counsel of knowledgeable experts, mistakes and failures are inevitable.
Technical and mechanical problems are often simpler than those involving human relationships. Without the guidance of sages— those with wisdom and insight—failure is the only outcome.
“Tong” (同) means “together,” “shared.” “Tong Ren” refers to people with common goals, shared interests, or even common adversaries—those who unite to live, fight, do business, and trade. The greater the number of like-minded people, the stronger the force, and the faster success comes.
The I Ching describes Tong Ren using the phrase “Heaven and Fire”, reminding us of the importance of forming alliances with those who share our vision. Only those with integrity and righteousness can truly apply this hexagram. A noble person unites people in shared purpose, while a petty person clings to biases—favoring those they like even when they are wrong and harming those they dislike even when they are right.
Thus, the saying goes: “Only a noble person can bring together the will of the people.”
Good fortune and financial success often come from strong relationships. When surrounded by good friends and allies, prosperity follows. However, if one associates with the wrong people, it can lead to ruin, both in business and in life.
The I Ching states:
“To unite with others, one must first be honest and upright.”
A noble person fosters unity; a petty person only brings division. Success in life and business is built on strong relationships, both internally and externally. Collaboration not only helps overcome obstacles but also unlocks new opportunities for collective growth.
The Tong Ren hexagram signifies cooperation, unity, and shared goals in relationships, business, and collective endeavors. It symbolizes strong connections between people who share the same vision, leading to success and prosperity through mutual support. As the saying goes:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” – African Proverb
