Hexagram 18 – Work on what has been poiled [Decay] – Rich I Ching

“Wind in the gorge” refers to the story of a mill horse that deviates from its circular path, overturning the millstone and causing panic. This hexagram warns of “doing things the wrong way.” When facing challenges, one must remain calm and reflect carefully; otherwise, mistakes may lead to disaster.

Doing things the wrong way means acting in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong people—deviating from proper methods, going against natural order, and ultimately causing disorder and failure.

“When the lower rebels against the higher, when a son defies his father, chaos ensues.”

One must be cautious of treacherous and vile individuals who sow discord.

The hexagram “Gu” (Decay, Pestilence) is named after a venomous insect in ancient legends, believed to bring fatal harm.

Taoist teachings state, “Gu means disturbance.” This hexagram signifies deception and manipulation—petty villains spreading harmful rumors to mislead the righteous and create turmoil.

Ku represents ultimate decay and corruption.

“When the eldest daughter marries the youngest son, disorder arises.”

This symbolizes unnatural arrangements that disrupt harmony, causing anxiety and confusion. If the upper is not righteous, the lower will descend into chaos. When there is no harmony between leaders and subordinates, disorder festers. Worse still, if the lower actively opposes the higher, great upheaval follows.

Drawing Hexagram Gu is a serious warning: beware of deceitful individuals, as they are like venomous pests, ready to harm at any moment. Your financial and business situation may be in crisis. This hexagram suggests that someone may be sabotaging your work, or a major negative event is approaching, threatening your success.

Business Strategy Interpretation:

To navigate this phase, a business must focus on rectifying past mistakes and strengthening its foundation for future growth. This requires decisiveness in identifying and resolving issues, along with a commitment to continuous innovation.

“The wise learn from past failures and turn them into stepping stones for success.” Restructuring and Long-Term Planning

Transformation must be accompanied by a long-term vision to ensure sustainable growth. Changes should not be mere temporary fixes but rather solid foundations for lasting success

Only by embracing necessary improvements and fostering resilience can a business unlock new strength, drive development, and secure long-term prosperity
